Every once in a while, a session comes along that feels deeply meaningful—not just for the couple in front of the camera, but for me as a photographer. This anniversary session with John, his wife, and their son Kip at the DC War Memorial was one of those moments. It beautifully reflected everything I love about being a DC anniversary photographer.
I didn’t photograph their original wedding. This session was something I captured as a favor for a friend. However, the moment I arrived I knew their story was something special. The way they connected with each other, how effortlessly they settled into each other’s presence, and the joy they carried as a family made it feel like I’d known them far longer than a single morning. Being an anniversary photographer in DC adds a unique depth to sessions filled with such genuine connection.
The DC War Memorial is one of Washington’s most underrated gems. Quiet, elegant, and framed by tall marble columns, it offers the perfect setting for intimate and timeless portraits. As the sunlight filtered through the trees, everything was wrapped in a warm, golden glow—almost as if the monument itself was celebrating their love story. These are the kinds of mornings that remind me why anniversary photography in DC is so meaningful.
John and his wife brought a classic, timeless style that paired beautifully with the architecture. However, the true star of the session was Kip. His bright personality brought energy to every moment—whether he was perched on the marble steps, sneaking shy smiles toward the camera, or being pulled into hugs by his parents. Capturing families at this stage of life is one of the most rewarding parts of my work as a DC anniversary photographer.
What I love most about anniversary sessions is that they celebrate a love that has grown, evolved, and deepened through real life—marriage, parenthood, challenges, joy, and everything in between. Watching John and his wife honor that journey with Kip right beside them made this session feel like a tribute not only to their marriage, but to the beautiful life they’ve built together.

As I photographed them, I was reminded of how quickly seasons change—how little ones grow, how families expand, how moments that feel ordinary now become priceless memories later. That’s why documenting life as it unfolds matters so much. And one of the greatest joys for us at Charlie & Valarie Photography is growing with the families we photograph. We’re family-oriented, raising little ones ourselves, and we understand how fast time moves. It is an honor when families come back year after year, allowing us to capture the changing chapters of their story.
Even though I didn’t capture their wedding day, being part of this moment meant so much. As a photographer who specializes in DC anniversary photography, sessions like this remind me exactly why I love what I do. You can explore more of our work on our Portfolio page.
